Hello, is it possible for some more information about the auto dim function on the new firmware for the cascade? How is it different from the default auto dim and auto off?
And, if I understand it correctly, apart from i2s and auto, dim, there is no new features or corrections in this new firmware, that would affect the system performance or sound quality. Is this so?
I just installed it. Auto-Dim worked before the upgrade and it still works. My Pro-USB, which uses the Pro-ISL module, worked before the update and still works.
I thought the auto-dim update was for Digital-Director without Cascade.
I just don’t like to mess with firmware without any real benefit. Risking a power loss in the middle or something else going wrong. Especially if I don’t know a recovery technique. The old adagio: if it ain’t broken…
The beauty of an MSB update file is that you play a music file just like you would play any other music file. It’s very simple (if your system plays bit perfect) and it takes 2 min max.
If power is truly not stable… you may not be able to listen to a lot of music either… if you need any help and you are in Europe, let me know and I’ll guide you trought the process…
Tx. In fact I live in Brazil. My power has been sufficiently stable for long listening sessions. But you know how it goes: once you really need it do be stable, it won’t.
Should it envolve real gains in performance or sound quality, I would move one of my no-breaks to the dac. That is the only way I feel safe enough.
The “adds auto display dimming” was a typo and has been fixed.
The Cascade has always had this feature and I simply applied the same description text to all the units that received an updated firmware. The Discrete, Premier, Reference, and Select all recieved auto dimming in this last update.
@Jonathan_Gullman can speak more on whether or not there were any bug fixes or sonic updates added, but the main service upgrades were for the Universal I2S compatibility.
The change to the Cascade DAC was primarily for support for the Universal I2S input. It had had changes to increase the stability of the code so it’s still recommended. No changes to the sound was created at this time.
To all, we will be posting a video on the update next week along with a final version of code. We have one more feature we are going to squeeze in before we push the update over email to all users. The video should cover all the features and how to use them.
No, the PCB would have to be exchanged to get it up and running again. That being said, we will list out all the changes and see if it is worth it for you. Most of them are user experience, and no performance increase for the Cascade at this time. Will let you decide that for yourself. Perhaps best to wait for future updates that will have an impact on the sound.
I did the SW upgrade on Saturday morning on my Reference DAC+DD to be able to host the Universal I2S card few hours later. It went well. However, I observed a strange thing. During the DAC upgrade after the first speech of the lady, on can hear few minutes of music. Usually is it heard on both speakers. This time, I heard it only on the right speaker.
The second sequence of music was present on both speakers as well as the two consecutive music sequences when I I upgraded the DD.
Is it normal Doctor ?
Manifestly, it did not have any impact on the upgrade but just wanted to share the observation.
Normal? Probably not. We will check the file just to make sure it isn’t mono or something like that. Not to worry though, it should not have any affect on the updates. Could also just have needed a reset after the firmware, especially depending on which versions it was being updated from. Thanks for the feedback!
