Video mode display

Great idea this forum to raise questions or suggestions !

A question to Jonathan :
When using the Reference DAC + DD in video mode (for example when watching a opera or film and routing the sound via the Coax output of the BluRay player through the DAC Sp/dif input), there is a “v” displayed on the right replacing the “+” (indication of the DD is in use) as well “Video” displayed on the lower row, hence two indications of the video mode. Why is that ?
When no signal is presented on the input in video mode, the display shows “0 -0k”.
Why not displaying the bit length and sampling frequency in video mode ? Any reason ?
Conversely, if there is a valid reason to show “Video” on the lower row in lieu of the bit length and sampling frequency, then why not leaving the display of the “+” (I know, I’m splitting hairs … ) ?

Keen observation. There are a few reasons behind the choices we made.

First, the “+” is removed because video mode bypasses the Director’s extra processing for lower latency. So, we don’t want to indicate it.

The reason the sample rate is now hidden when video mode is enabled, is to further highlight you are listening to a degraded source. We have seen many show demonstrations with the little “v” present on the DAC screen because the folks running the show were not aware of what it was. Having the full word “video” we believe helps to highlight this. We don’t need to see the source details because the signal is already being played back at a lower quality.

Now, we could remove the small “v” when the word “video” is displayed, you are not wrong about that one  Maybe @Jonathan_Gullman will add that in the next software update.

With this explanation, it is crystal clear. And it is fine like this. Don’t bother removing the “v”.
