Vid Displayed

I just got a new TV. It is connected to my Discrete DAC via TOSLink, just like my last TV. I noticed the Discrete displays “Vid” and then “48v” when I turn the TV on. I remember the DAC used to display “24” and then “48v”. I am wondering if my new TV is sending something different than my old one, or maybe the Discrete software update I installed about a week ago changed what it was displaying and I didn’t notice until now. What does the new Vid message mean? Thanks.

I use a TOSLink out of my TV connected to the TOSLink input on the SPDIF module, but had it plugged directly into my Premier DAC before getting the Digital Director.

I have never seen ‘Vid’, mine will display “Video” when that function is toggled. The video function helps align the video and audio, so the lips move with the words.

I typically see 24 - 48 which is the basic frequency of the SPDIF generated by the TV. This data is the same as a music file in 24 bits, at 48 kbps? Not sure what the actual sample frequency is expressed as.

If you are having sound issues, you might find settings on you TV to change. My system does best with PCM setting, and clicking on Stereo.

No sound issues. Just wondering what the message means and what changed it. The old message of “24” was the word length of 24 bits. The message of “48v” indicates 48kHz sample frequency, and the v indicates video/lipsync mode. I don’t see the 24 anymore. “Vid” seems to be displayed in its place.

Mine is on auto dim, so I only see changes show up. The 24/48 usually shows up while I’m choosing a show, so I tend not to see it. I do see “video” when I toggle it. I need to look into locking that via the menu.

I am still not understanding what the new Vid message is indicating, but what I really miss is the bit depth indication. Is there any way to confirm from the DAC that my TV is passing 24 bit stereo PCM data?

This is a new change and is correct. We wanted to make it very obvious as to video mode, so instead of a sample rate, it will report “Vid” or “Video” depending on your screen size.

We were finding people didn’t know what the v was and were listening to music in video mode.

Yes. You should be able to turn off video mode and toggle the inputs. With video mode off, you will see the 24 again. Video mode will be off, but it will let you check once to verify. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about this as I’ve never heard of a 16-bit output from a tv.

Thanks for the information Jonathan. If you are taking opinions, I like the messages the old way. The Vid message is redundant with the v and displaying the bit depth was reassuring. Maybe you could display 3 messages: Vid, 24, 48v.
