Wondering where you stand on the quality of USB cable connected to your ProISL module? I have a Cardas Clear cable now, and I’m wondering if others have experienced any improvements in sound quality when using more costly cables?
hi @Hubbman I very recently auditioned eight USB cables ranging from $500-$4000. I was comparing them against my $125 Shunyata Venom USB cable from 10 years ago. Before I share my findings, some context is necessary because everyone’s setup and needs are different. All my music - most of which is DSD64 to DSD256 - lives on a high-speed external SSD connected to a dedicated Macbook Pro running Audirvana. So I only need a 0.5-1m USB cable between the Macbook Pro and the PRO ISL module. The fiber optic cable from the PRO ISL module runs about 10ft to the Cascade DAC Director.
My findings? No difference, whatsoever! My old $125 cable sounded the same as the $4000 USB cable and everything inbetween. I tested pretty thoroughly over a span of a week listening to tracks I know well.
Having said that… as I said earlier, your needs might be different from mine. I believe USB cables don’t make much difference, if at all, unless you’re talking longer lengths (2m or longer) where interference or other issues might become a factor.
I used a Cardas clear beyond USB cable for a number of years and was very happy with it. Recently I bought an In-akustik Reference 2.0 USB and the difference was immediately noticeable. Better clarity, definition and openess. Of course, your results may vary. Best, Larry
Before using the ProISL, I and a friend found that Cardas to be bested by my Nordost (which one escapees me right now as I’m away from my gear). Running either into the ProISL may render that observation moot.
USB can make a (very slight) difference, as it does carry a signal that can be altered by noise around your system (especially if it is near power or other digital components).
If your cables aren’t to long, well made and shielded the chance of digital slurring is slim.
Once it is converted to optical (light signal) you don’t have to worry about electrical noise.
So in my opinion find a well made USB cable with good shielding, solid connectors and not to long (best under 1.5meters).
