Renderer question

My source is a PC running JRiver. I have read how to use the Renderer module by connecting it to the same network that the PC is on. My question is; can you instead just directly connect the audio PC to the Renderer by running an Ethernet cable between them?

Better to wait for MSB technical support. But in almost all cases you need a router to assign up addresses and create the subnets. A direct connection would do neither, and the connection would not work.

And you should you connect both directly, how is your PC going to connect to your network/internet?

My PC is already connected to my router

Does your PC have two Ethernet ports?

If so, you could try bridging them, so both ports will be part of the same network. If bridged, the renderer might work directly connected to your pc.

It is easy to do in network settings. Lots of tutorials in the web.

@Iansr , unless your computer is setup to act as a switch (with two ports), I do not think it will be workable. I am sure there could be a niche way to make something work, but probably not through standard methods.

@Jonathan_Gullman might have some other insights into this though.

Daniel is correct. The Renderer requires a DHCP server to issue a IP address. Some computers can do this, others cannot.

You can try what jvvita suggests. I personally haven’t done this in a very long time. I know some servers are setup to do this.

Dont mean to hijack this thread but my question is relevant to the one the OP asked. In a nutshell, is it possible to route regular Windows audio through an ethernet cable/router and into the Renderer? Basically not just use the Renderer to stream music via Roon or other specific software but instead use it to route all PC audio?

Thanks!

@tdx44 . Alas, no. The Renderer supports UPnP software and Roon, and perhaps, there is a piece of software out there that windows can send information and then the software could forward it? When it comes to computers, we never say never… because there is a whole world of support for many niche applications. As far as I know, this is not possible.

Thanks for the update. I’ll look more into it and update this thread if i find something.

You can use foobar2000. They have an upnp plugin. Good news: it is free. Bad news: some sweat is required.

I believe audirvana also communicates to upnp endpoints. Audirvana will also work with Qobuz/tidal. Not free, but plug and play.

It will not route all pc audio, though.

Foi bar may do it, combining with virtual-cable as input.
