Ethernet setup suggestions

General question to the network dudes out there. I am an amateur network dude, having done HOME network stuff since it came out.

My current problem is the Renderer V2 keeps getting lost to Roon. I end up having to actually unplug either from the wall, or the Renderer V2 itself to reset the IP, and allow Roon to find it.

My current home network

Quantum Fiber - Unifi Dream Machine SE - Unifi Switch - UpTone Audio etherRegen - Renderer.

Different cable from switch to a Unifi Desktop Switch to computer. No wifi involved in the audio chain.

I tried a generic Unifi desktop switch, with no improvement.

Both on the same network/subnet

Fixed IP (reserved in UniFi speech?) or other suggestions?

What DAC do you have? If you have a Discrete or Premier DAC go into the menu and make sure the Render Power is set to “always on.”

Premier DAC + DD. I’ll have a run through the menu and look. Thanks.

Alright, there is no Renderer Power in the menu. I get Roon Remote option, but not the Renderer Power option

DAC REV 25.14

DD REV 16.11

I’ll check current firmware numbers.

Make sure QOS is turned off, Ubiquity seems to have an intersting feature in this area, also how are you reserving the IP and do you have any VLANs defined?

I have not reserved IP at this point. I will check on QoS setting.

I have 3 VLANs - Main, IoT and Management.

The etherRegen is silent in the UniFi world, with the MSB device being seen in the main network when I use the tree diagram. (Directly off the main switch)

Babysitting today, so out of the house. According to the iPad UniFi app, even though the DAC is powered off, I can see the MSB Renderer V2 on the tree diagram, so it appears, the Renderer V2 is indeed in the “always on” state.

I will have to see what the diagram shows when Roon can’t “find” the Renderer.

Of course, I noticed that I still have a “default” VLAN, and a Camera VLAN as well as the above ones. I currently have the VLANs on full access, with no discrete firewall rules at this time. That’s another chunk of knowledge to gain, and experimentation to do, when the wife is not around.

Confirmed no SmartQue, nor QoS, in the internet setting panel.

Hmm, and you dont have the sleep/power off function enabled on the DAC

I don’t see any options like that on the Premier. Currently I have to unplug, then plug back in the Ethernet cable. Power cycling the DAC does not fix it. (renderer lives in Digital Director, which is constantly on, unless powered off itself - different than Cascade)

My next debugging will occur the next time the DAC is not “seen” by Roon.

Then I will look into a fixed IP address, and whether that can even be used by Roon, or if it helps discovery.

Thanks for help all.

Of course, it’s behaved perfectly since I posted here. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Alright, it happened just now. It seems it is the Roon updating that has caused this one. All the other output devices show up - Sonos boxes, TVs, and Apple TVs, computer outputs… just not the MSB Renderer.

I have a subnet called Main, but the unmanaged hub (etherRegen) was still on the default net. I just swapped that main switch port to Main. I still need to go unplug/plug the cable to reset. The etherRegen also feeds the AppleTV though, which is present on my Roon output list.
