Why Larry Gullman is No Longer at MSB

I assure you all that there are many other tasks calling my attention that I would rather be working on currently. But, with the release of the Sentinel DAC imminent, there has been a resurgence of rumors and messages and it has become an unfortunate distraction. I usually respond to these messages on a case by case basis with a similar message to what is written below. Reactions are always kind and often lead to friendships where there were none. I can’t, however, respond to this topic on a public scale without a public response. Jonathan and I feel we are both in a place where that time has come.

This is a deeply personal step for us. We ask for kindness and understanding.

Why Larry Gullman is No Longer at MSB

Some of you may know him personally or likely have at least heard of Larry Gullman at some point as part of MSB. You also may have noticed he has disappeared from the conversation. He has been scrubbed from our company history. We’ve refrained from divulging the details because our reasons for doing so are personal and painful, but Jonathan and I have decided to share a bit of our story with the sincere hope for empathy and understanding. We want nothing more than to move forward from this with a stronger relationship with our community and we know this can only happen with open honesty.

Larry Gullman, our biological father, purchased MSB from the original founder and became the sole owner early in the company’s history. Nearly a decade ago, Larry was arrested and registered for molesting one of our sisters. On top of this, he was an abusive parent to Jonathan and I. These are deeply traumatic experiences that have left many scars from which our families will never recover. Jonathan and I have completely removed Larry from our lives. Even now, I no longer carry his family name. With time, therapy, and distance, we have found some small measure of peace in our lives, but we will carry these experiences with us for life.

At the time these events came to light, Jonathan, Dustin, and I had already been designing and running MSB for years. We had a passion for this work and at its core, we were MSB. While CEO, Larry often travelled to shows and dealers where he took credit for our designs, but as long as he stayed out of our way, we were able to focus on making great products. After Larry was arrested, there were two options: to walk out and start a new company, or to remove him. Thankfully, he willingly departed MSB because without us, there was no MSB. As of July 2016, Larry was no longer involved with MSB or any adjacent business.

We occasionally get threatening emails or forum posts regarding Larry’s crimes. Every time, I choose to believe this comes from a good place of wanting transparency on who buyers are supporting. I agree and have more personal motivation to see justice dealt than most. But the great irony is this harassment is solely targeting and harming the victims of the abuse, not the abuser. I am happy to answer further questions directly if anyone needs further clarification.

Going forward, we ask for an end to the threats and harassment. While we understand the concern, it has done more harm than good and is simply targeting the wrong people. We really do hope the community has the empathy, compassion, and understanding to move forward with us as we heal. Larry is not the founder of MSB, he is not the owner of MSB, and will certainly not be the legacy of MSB. He is a tiny blip in the rich tapestry of artistry, and engineering that makes up this company. Ultimately, your support means taking a stand against abusers and bullies, and takes us one step closer to a kinder world.

MSB has a brilliant future ahead of it, and we will continue to serve our community with expert craftsmanship and groundbreaking design. This is our passion. We hope you join us for the journey.

Sincerely,

Dan Francis

Dan , thanks for sharing . I feel some people don’t realize who they are hurting with these comments. One cannot lash out at a whole family for the actions of one person . Best of luck .

None of us choose the family we are born into, and none of us should ever be judged—or held accountable—for the actions of others, no matter the biological connection. To target victims or their loved ones for the crimes of someone else is not only cruel, it’s profoundly unjust.

Dan, Jonathan, and Dustin—your work, your integrity, and your passion have always stood on their own. The artistry, engineering, and dedication you bring to this craft are what define you, not the shadow of someone else’s wrongs. Anyone who has spent time in this community, heard your products, or worked with you knows the truth: you are men of character delivering something exceptional to a passion we all share.

You didn’t owe anyone this level of personal transparency, and yet you chose to share it with courage and grace. That is the mark of strength. I hope this community rallies around you with empathy, kindness, and the respect you’ve more than earned.

Bravo to you all—for your resilience, your talent, and for continuing to move forward despite the noise.

No one really knows what you and your family have gone through. A very brave step to share this much transparently with your user/customer/patron community.

I’m relatively new to the MSB community. Very happy with the products and, certainly, pleased to see the transparent and caring community you guys have created.

Warmest regards!

I stood with MSB when this happened and had to endure many comments to defend this brand, where it was a person who has made a mistake. I also saw the pain and disruption it caused.

The current MSB team pulled together and stood as one to go trough this. When i see how each and everyone of them has grown as a person, took responsability for MSB as a company and for their families…i am proud to be part of the MSB family.

It should not be MSB being attacked for a person that is no longer involved (10 years now) yet made a huge mistake and paid for it.

However, I could imagine he’s proud of their path and watches it from far…yet his mistake has cost him a part of his family. Let that be the hardest punishment and put this subject to rest.

MSB is doing a great job, is making fantastic products and has great people…those digging for old shit to make up negative stories… may Karma come after you… and I trust, those who care for justice will stand united against these attacs.

Be well and enjoy the music. :folded_hands:t2:

Thanks for sharing this. I know it takes courage to do so. I can feel the pain while reading those words. I hope you and your family get the best emotional support possible, and I am glad to see that you and your brother have been able to carry on and build your own amazing career.

I am also new to the MSB community but I am already amazed by your meticulous design philosophy. Best wishes to your family and your business.

All I can offer beyond what others have so eloquently is to commend the sons for overcoming their childhood of abuse and trauma. Many others would have taken a different and self destructive path forward. Instead you have turned injury into wildly productive and creative success.

Thanks for sharing Daniel! It really takes time (or even a whole life) to heal from childhood abuse. And it really needs courage to share but I believe you’ll be doing great and we’re all here to support this community.

Dan, my best to you and Jonathan in this life going forward. I agree with your assessment that putting this out there is important for your moving forward. I had heard vague stories about Mr. Gullman, but I know that life is better when we are not tagged with the “sins of our fathers” or the sins of our species!

Again, kudos to you for being blunt with your story and gathering yourselves to live your best lives despite your past harm.

Dear Dan and Jonathan,

You two are brave souls for sharing about these traumatic events publicly. As I know from personal experience, it takes courage to do so and I salute you both for that courage.

What Larry did was plain wrong and I support you and I take a stand together with you against abusers and bullies.

Neither you, nor MSB, should be haunted by something somebody else did and I wish for your message to clear things up for once and all.

Moreover, I wish for you to be able to leave the trauma of these events completely behind you and if there is anything I, or anybody else for that matter, can do to support you in that, just reach out.

Loving regards,

Ron

Dear Daniel and Jonathan,

First of all, I don’t understand why some people speak badly about MSB and you guys just to elevate themselves. It truly makes me sad to see such behavior.

You have my full support, 100%, and I believe you are some of the best in the hi-fi industry. You have always been there for me, and I want you to know that I will always be there for you as well.

You create wonderful products, and because of that, there are some who speak untrue things to hurt you and the company. That is not okay, and it’s truly unfair.

Please know that I stand behind you and value everything you do. Keep doing what you do best, and don’t let negativity get to you.

Warm regards,

Henrik Berg

If I ever had any doubts about MSB, with this courageous act you’ve just given me one more reason to support a brand and, more importantly, people who deserve my respect. Not another word.

Hope to meet you in person in Italy soon (as promised).

I have met Daniel, Jonathan and Dustin in their factory/office in Watsonville last year. I must say they are a few of the most gracious, sincere, passionate and down to earth people I have ever met. They really showed their passion, dedication and sincerity towards producing better music for us! And I believe all MSB products are worth their costs.

I sincerely wish Daniel and Jonathan and their team every success in their life and incredible work adventure ahead.

Best regards,

Desmond

I join those others on this conversation in saluting your integrity and courage in facing this immense moral and emotional challenge. Left hidden, this kind of abuse echoes and repeats down through generations. No doubt this has been immensely painful. Know that, as well as healing your family, your choices and actions have also contributed to the greater good.

Sorry for my tardiness, Daniel and Jonathan what you did takes courage, how you did it shows compassion and sharing it with us reiterates how I have felt since out first conversation. MSB treats it’s customers like friends, and for that alone I applaud you.

The fact that you make some of the best sounding and best value gear already made most of us loyal to the brand, but the fact is I think of you more like a trusted partner than a vendor, and with your permission I would even like to call you a friend.

Jonathan, Daniel, Dustin : you deserve our deepest respect for your unbelievable achievements under such circumstances.
