I hope the wise minds on this forum can provide some advice regarding a potential EMF issue.
I have a Select 2 with a DD. Both the power bases and the DD are plugged into a Torus power conditioner. The Torus uses a large toroidal transformer for line isolation.
I plan to purchase an HRS EXR rack and place the DD on the bottom shelf with the DAC stacked on top of the DD. There is just enough space for the Torus to sit on the floor under the rack which would place it about 1/2 inch below the shelf which holds the DD and DAC stack.
Is it wise to place a noise sensitive DD and DAC so close to a toroidal transformer based power conditioner? The cases of the MSB gear are solid chunks of metal and I’m hoping the chassis will provide enough EMF shielding to prevent any issues.
Does anyone have any experience or advice about how far away a toroidal transformer conditioner should be placed from a DD and DAC?
One of the advantages of toroid transformers is they emit less airborne EMI than other transformer types. But it is not zero. In addition to the advice of our engineers, to never stack any equipment near a large toroid transformer, I have direct experience with this when a customer received his new DAC and I could tell from his comments that he was not hearing what he expected. I asked a few questions and he said he had a brand of power conditioner that had two very large. toroid transformers on a top shelf that was one rack over from his DAC and it’s power supplies. I told him the first thing to do is to take the power conditioner off the rack and put it behind the rack on the floor. He immediately could not believe the difference gushing over the sound he expected to hear from the DAC. My advice is to get the Torus Power as far away from any equipment as possible. This is not a comment about the quality of the Torus Power. This has more to do with the sensitivity of all digital and analog equipment to airborne EMI., Please try it and let us know your results. Thank you!
