I have an MSB Premier DAC and Digital Director, which is connected to a D’Agostino Momentum C2 preamp and Momentum S250 Amp. Does this added information change the recommendation?
Thanks for the update @dbelam . It does. With the director, you have great isolation and reclocking arriving before the DAC already. So the Pro USB vs USB vs Universal I2S are much closer to each other. The Pro USB as extra isolation, but I have this unnecessary with the Digital Director installed. I would probably encourage the standard USB input as it will give you the most flexibility for future system changes.
If you have a dealer who can give you an AB demo to choose between the USB and universal I2S, that could be the best way to make a final decision.
Just a FYI, the Universal I2S is not a clock synchronous input. I’ve yet to see a source with an I2S output that supports an external word-sync clock.
As Daniel said, both the USB sources will be clock synchronous as both are running off the audio clock in the DAC.
Will this work with the MSB I2S input module?
An SACD player with I2S DSD64 output for external Dac other than PS Audio.
It’s $2,400 (vs PS Audio’s $7,000 or $9,000).
Here is a recent review,
If anyone nabs one, let us know. If one gets sent to us we should be able to accommodate it if the performance is there. Free I2S input module for whoever does
I think maybe the Laiv Harmony has a setting for internal/external.
One of these Onix players just showed up at the office, we will be working to add it! Thanks
Impressive
Someone heard the call for a free I2S input module
Now any thoughts on extending the same concept of a free module for the Aurender N50
Heh, Aurender sent us the N50 directly and indeed got a free module
Hi all, Discrete Dac user here. Using hifirose RS130 with usb pro kit.
Recently a friend loan me his Matrix MS-1 streamer. It does not have USB audio out. Only IIS-LVDS Digital Output. Can it work for my Discrete Dac if i get this I2S input module?
PCM 16-32Bit /44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352.8kHz, 384kHz, 705.6kHz, 768kHz
DSD 2.82MHz, 3.07MHz, 5.64MHz, 6.14MHz, 11.29MHz, 12.29MHz, 22.58MHz, 24.58MHz, 45.16MHz,49.15MHz (Native)
What is the highest DSD rate supported by the i2S module. I am limited to DSD 128 and wanted to verify that is its limit. Thanks
Any updates on the Onix transport integration?
The highest DSD limit is based on the I2S source. Many of the sources don’t play much over 1x or 2x DSD. The Aurender N50 in the office I just tested with 8x DSD and it worked perfectly.
@MSB-NC The Onix integration is done. The firmware should be public this week or early next week depending on the product type.
@DJQ I don’t know what it would take to get the Matrix streamer working. I would need one at the office to test with. The one thing I can say is many sources’ outputs do NOT match what the manual says they are. Some have the phase inverted, the channels swapped, or the timing wrong.
Also, the only DSD we support is DSD based on a 44.1kHz clock. This is your standard 1x DSD64 (2.8MHz), 2x DSD128 (5.6MHz), 4x DSD256 (11.29MHz), 8x DSD1024 (22.58MHz). We do not support the 48kHz rates of DSD as these are very much non-standard and only exist due to DSD upsampling programs.
Jonathan I must have an anomaly. Using a hifi rose rs130 with i2S output into MSB i2S module plays any DSD files up to dsd128. It will not play dsd256 or dsd512. I confirmed it will resolve those resolutions into a Laiv harmony via i2S.
Interesting. I tested the HiFi Rose to 4x DSD (it didn’t work at 8x) and it worked fine. I wonder if something has changed with the output or if they had a new firmware update since it was here.
What happens when you play these rates? What DAC do you have? You can private message me a video/pictures if you like.
Currently using a HiFi Rose RS130 with the i2s module with great sonic results. Would using the Premier clock instead of the RS130 clock result in even better sonics? What is the specification on the i2s clock out BNC?
User error on my part. I failed to set the I2S module to the Rose setting. First class service all the way helping to resolve my fumble.
So it’s all good and working at this point?
The word-sync output is disabled as the HiFi Rose doesn’t support a word-sync input. They want a not-useful-for-audio 10MHz clock and word sync is either 44.1kHz or 48kHz depending on the music being played.
