I want to know the difference between the dac modules of Discrete dac and Analog dac

Analog DAC has two 25 bit D/A,Should I buy an updated dac?

Hello @myy

Any of our current DACs, including the Discrete, are VASTLY better sounding than the Analog DAC. The difference is more than just a different DAC module design.

The Discrete DAC has a lot of new technology that the Analog DAC doesn’t/can’t have. For starters, it’s a balanced design instead of the single-ended design of the Analog DAC.

To answer your question of should you buy an updated DAC, only you can make that decision. If you want a significant increase in performance, absolutely!

I have never seen the number of bits in the Prime, hybrid, or hybrid mkii DAC modules disclosed. This appears to be a trade secret for the modern product line as opposed to being advertised for older products such as the Analog. It is probably not the most important attribute to focus on though. The Analog DAC’s 25 bits is mathematically equivalent to 152db, which no DAC in history has ever come close to achieving in an independent lab test. The state of the art for measured performance seems to be about 123db, which is 21 ENOB (equivalent number of bits). This is just based on lab reports I have read. The balanced design Jonathan mentioned is a more important attribute in my opinion. I would also guess the compute power is a lot more capable in the newer products, allowing for improvements in digital filtering. The current product line is awesome both functionality and sonically, no mater how many bits are in there. You won’t regret upgrading.

In terms of digital technology, the new MSB is certainly more competitive, but from a usage perspective, the new Discrete DAC does not have the pure analog volume control of the Analog DAC. Its usable volume range is only 80-100, and going below this significantly reduces detail. When I compared the two DACs side by side, I found some differences in the high frequencies. If your system uses the DAC for volume control, you will need to purchase an independent analog preamplifier to achieve the effect of the Analog DAC.

In fact, if your budget allows, I recommend directly buying a premier DAC or a reference DAC—the former offers a significant improvement, while the latter comes with excellent volume control.

Buying a used Reference DAC is one of the best deals available. Incredible overall vs cost. We also support used product and sales, so reach out if that is where you are looking?
