I’ve just updated my Discrete DAC’s firmware, and found an issue of Auto-dimming.
After enabling Auto-dimming, the display kept repeating the cycle of dimming and back to normal brightness. The duration of each cycle is not fixed. Sometimes, it stayed dimmed for 4 or 5 seconds before going back to normal brightness; but in most time, it stayed dimmed for 1 or 2 seconds only.
The interesting thing is, this issue happened only when I played some specific music files. When I played some other music files, the auto-dimming just worked normally.
Anybody knows how to fix this?
(BTW, can we adjust the brightness in “dimmed” status? Would be great if it can be dimmed further)
(Another thing which seems related to the firmware)
The “Off” option of display seems different now?
I used to keep display setting as “Off”. Whenever a new music file starts being played, the display turned on automatically (even if the new music file shares the same spec as the previous music file).
But now, if the new music file shares the same spec as the previous music file, the display will not turn on.
Is this a bug?
It sounds like it’s waking up the display when the bit-rate changes and it shouldn’t. I can look into this and see if I can’t fix it in the next firmware update.
No, you can’t change the “dim” setting. It’s basically half the current brightness. So if you adjust the brightness the related “dim” will also change.
The display should not turn on unless something changes (input or sample rate). The bit-depth shouldn’t wake it up.
Thanks for clarifying, Jonathan.
BTW, I’ve got another question about brightness…
Let’s say the brightness is set to “8”, and the current mode is Auto Dimming.
If we use remote to change the display mode [before] the display automatically goes dim, we shall have “Always On” mode with brightness staying at “8”.
However, if we change the display mode [after] the display automatically goes dim… we shall have “Always On” mode, but the display will stay dim.
This doesn’t sound correct. I should be working on a new firmware for this in the coming weeks to add support for two new I2S sources for our Universal I2S input. I can check this at the same time to see what it does for me.
I’ll also send you a private message with a link to test software if you would like.
Hi Jonathan, I also have similar issue, except that it stays dimmed longer. The issue seems to be occurring only when I am not playing music. For example, when I play on Roon everything is fine, but when I pause the music the issue begin to occur. I tried to turn off Roon and the issue persists. It seems to happening just whenever I set Renderer as input and not playing music. @Jonathan_Gullman
