In praise of the Premier DAC …

As per title, I really loved my time with the Premier DAC. I started my MSB relationship with a Discrete, a lovely lovely DAC, but the Premier was indisputably a big step forward. I now have a Reference, which is yet another big step forward (and I have also demoed the Cascade…damn lol), but the Premier has probably been the one DAC that has surprised me the most: in my humble opinion it is the best value for money DAC of the entire MSB line and really so easy to fall in love with

Well for me the Cascade is the best buy what so ever the performance you get is so much better end all the rest out there.

i understand why you have it like that and yes it is good

Henrik no doubt the Cascade is better, and much better indeed (I indeed demoed it …). If one can afford it there is no real match between the two. But for a third or so of the price of the Cascade (and we are talking about a lot of $$$ less), you still get a LOT of DAC with the Premier, and in a well set up system one can still be very happy with “just” a Premier DAC. So yes, indeed it’s big kudos to MSB all the way.

@Lu62 , agreed! I still have the Premier DAC in my home… It is such a great product, I really love everything about it. I find myself still recommending it to anyone curious in MSB products.

Although, the Cascade is calling

I would love to hear any further comparisons of the jump from the discrete to the premier.

I have owned the discrete with dual psu for the past two years however the premier has been on my mind on and off…I love with the discrete does for me.

I had the Discrete for a year or so and I have loved it from the moment I started using it. It replaced a Chord Dave (the Dave had power aplenty but after the initial excitement I realised that just a lot of power wasn’t what I really wanted) and it was paired with a Gryphon Essence pre and power amp combo for a year or so (great pairing).

Then I demoed an S202 power amp and I really liked it (my now irreplaceable silent beast) so much so to eventually acquire the S202 and trade off the Gryphon combo. But then I found myself in a conundrum because after a while I realised that the internal pre amp of the Discrete was not good enough for my requirements. Because I did not want to go into the pre amp route again (I was already by then all digital, streaming only) I demoed a Premier and the Premier internal pre amp was indeed quite a bit better of the one in the Discrete (not as good as the Reference pre amp but that is another story). With the Premier and the S202 everything was now more powerful again, I would say at the same level as with the Gryphon’s. Then, the more I had the Premier, the more I liked it. While the Discrete was absolutely lovely, without a separate pre amp it was a little too “discrete” at times, lacking indeed a little “power” when I wanted to go louder. The Premier solved that. Then the Reference took it to the next level.
